Great news: more shell choices for Kumu drums

The sound of a drum starts with the drumshell and now there’s plenty to choose from. In addition to the excellent original Kumu shell, I’ve developed three new options: 66, 77 and 99. Now there’s a drumshell for every taste.

The new Kumu drumshells are:

66 is a 6 mm / 6 ply shell without reinforcement hoops. This is a shell structure which has been highly acknowledged all over the world for a long time, with the added bonus that it’s made of 100% Finnish birch. The 66 shells are available for toms and snare drums.

77 is, of course, 7 mm / 7 ply without reinforcement hoops, with the above specifications. It’s available for bass drums.

99 is naturally 9 mm / 9 ply and this particular shell structure is available for toms, snare drums and bass drums. If 66 and 77 are all around shells, 99 is fairly unique and at its best in heavier playing.

Now you can choose toms and snare drums from these options:

Kumu Original is the super-thin shell that built Kumu’s reputation. On the toms the shell thickness is 3.8 mm / 4 ply + thin 1.8 mm SoulRing reinforcement bands. The snares have the same 3.8 mm / 4 ply shells + SoulRings (top 3.8 mm, bottom 1.8 mm).

The fundamental pitch for the Kumu Original shells is very low, with great sensitivity and warmth.

Kumu 66 has a full sound with great attack. The fundamental pitch is slightly higher than in the Originals.

Kumu 99 is a thick and heavy shell, and available for all drums. The thicker shell requires more energy when played and produces a lot of power in return.

The bass drum choices are:

Kumu Original, 5.5 mm / 5 ply + SoulRings. Let’s say, already a legendary bass drum... Very warm, an awesome kick sound.

Kumu 77, a strong-sounding all around shell.

Kumu 99 with its thicker shell requires more energy from the drummer, in return also gives a lot of power.

Happy New Year 2011 to all you drummers out there!

All the best,

Pekka

Kumu Royale, prototype set

As a builder of musical instruments I’ve always been fascinated by f-holes and their various designs on string instruments. Here we have a study of applying the f-hole’s form on acoustic drums, now it’s part of the Kumu tuning lugs. The set in question is a prototype and one of a kind as well. If you don’t mind me saying, looks pretty amazing, don’t you think?

The easiest and fastest way to contact me is to click the ”contact” link above; I’ll answer as quickly as possible. Please include your e-mail address or otherwise I’ll be unable to reply. The traditional e-mail is recommended for inquiries, and you can call me as well. However, during the daytime I’m usually in the middle of work, so answering might be more difficult.

It’s also worth checking out the ”FAQ” section, as well as ”The characteristics of SideHoles.” And please note: when you wish to come and take a look at Kumu drums or test them, remember to contact me in advance.

There’s more information about Kumu drums and different options for them in the ”Kumu Drums” section, I highly recommend checking it out, too!
