New D model tuning lugs
In order for the shells to resonate as freely as possible, we have developed the all-new D model tuning lug. It combines the advantages of the tube lug and high tension lug designs. The new lug has only two attachment points to the shell, leaving the middle part of the shell free, which is important resonance-wise. On the other hand, the new lug has a strong and light die-cast structure, which evens out the stress caused by the tuning bolts.
To ensure the free and clear resonance of the toms, we use our own floating KumuRim suspension system which includes a side plate matching the color of the drum. The floor tom legs feature floating and resonance-enhancing air-suspension feet.
Steel hoops, wood hoops, what’s the difference?
Wood hoops add more “wood” to the sound: warmth, clarity, resonance and absolutely gorgeous rim shots and rim clicks. Kumu drums are available with two different wood hoop models. ClassicWoodHoop is a traditional, higher and thinner model, which incorporates hoop tension claws. SuperWoodHoop is a shallower, thicker model with countersunk holes for the tuning rods. All wood hoops are made individually by hand, so drums featuring wood hoops are more expensive than the ones equipped with steel hoops. The steel hoop used with Kumu drums is a 2.3 mm steel PowerHoop model, which brings out a strong, clear, lively sound.
Snare drum
Kumu snare drums are known for their full, sensitive, healthy sound. An extremely thin and unvented shell, thin SoulRing reinforcement hoops (top 3.6 mm, bottom 1.8 mm), top-notch bearing edges and deep snare beds enable a highly resonant sound, both for loud and soft playing. For the heavy-handed players the snare drums are equipped with a few small vents.
A Kumu specialty is the FreeFrame model, which has a unique structure: the top and bottom halves of the shell squeeze against a bridge in the middle, the tuning lugs and the snares attach to the bridge and the interior of the drum is totally smooth without any holes or screws.
Bass drum
Kumu bass drums have become sound engineers’ favorites. The warm, in-your-face sound is characteristic of these drums. The SideHole design developed by us has a lot of benefits: a solid front / resonant head brings out lots of extra sound (and looks good, too!!!) and miking the drum is very easy through the side hole. Today, almost all of the bass drums we make feature the SideHole design. The smaller 14" and 16" bass drums are equipped with a riser system, allowing the beater to hit in the center of the head. Also the 18" and 20" drums are available with this feature.
Bearing Edge
The bearing edge of the drum is comparable to, for example, a bridge on a guitar or violin: the clarity of the sound and the ease of tuning greatly depend on the correct and even shape of the edge. The bearing edges for Kumu drums vary from drum to drum. On the snare drums the bearing edge is slightly sharper and narrower on the bottom than the top, and the smaller toms have narrower edges than the larger ones. On the bass drums the bearing edges are rounder and wider. This ensures the best natural sound for each drum. All bearing edges are finished by hand, with the utmost precision.
Color and finishing options
Kumu drums are available with virtually any desired color, the color palette being almost limitless. You can choose, for example, a combination of two or more colors, fades, bursts, patterns and so on. There are two finishing options: the less expensive SatinSound (low-gloss satin wax) or GlossTone (hand-polished lacquer), which is also available with sparkles.
